Cost breakdown

ItemTypical range
NEMA 14-50 outlet installed (short run)$700 – $1,200
Hardwired charger installed (short run)$1,100 – $1,900
Extra wiring beyond 25 ft (per foot)$6 – $12
Electrical permit$25 – $800
Subpanel$500 – $2,500
Panel upgrade 100A → 200A$1,500 – $5,500

Charger hardware is extra: for example, a Grizzl-E Classic 40A lists at $300 and an Emporia Pro at $599 on the makers' stores (October 2026).

What makes an installation more expensive

  • Long wire runs. A charger far from the panel needs more heavy-gauge copper and conduit, and more labor.
  • A full or undersized panel. If a load calculation shows no room for a 40–60A circuit, options include a load-management device, a subpanel, or a service upgrade.
  • Detached garages and outdoor runs. Trenching or exterior conduit adds labor.
  • Local labor rates. Electrician wages differ widely by metro area (see below).

Ways to keep the cost down

  • Put the charger close to the electrical panel when you can.
  • Ask about a 40A circuit: it is enough to fully charge most EVs overnight and may avoid a panel upgrade.
  • Check your utility for a rebate before you buy hardware: some require specific chargers or enrollment.
  • Get a written quote that lists the permit, breaker, wire size and run length.

The federal 30C tax credit is no longer available for chargers placed in service after June 30, 2026 (IRS).
