240V outlet installation cost
A new 240V outlet for a dryer, range or workshop typically costs $200–$800 installed. A NEMA 14-50 outlet for charging an electric car typically costs $700–$1,200. Estimate yours and get matched with a licensed electrician, or up to three to compare.

Planning estimate. A licensed electrician gives the final price after seeing your panel and the route for the wire.
240V outlet cost breakdown
| Item | Typical range |
|---|---|
| 240V outlet for a dryer, range or workshop (installed) | $200 – $800 |
| NEMA 14-50 outlet for EV charging (short run, installed) | $700 – $1,200 |
| Extra wiring beyond about 25 ft (per foot) | $6 – $12 |
| Electrical permit | $25 – $800 |
The appliance-outlet range includes the permit in its source; the EV outlet range does not.
What raises the cost
- Distance from the panel. A 240V circuit needs heavy-gauge wire, so every extra foot adds material and labor. It is usually the biggest factor.
- Finished walls and outdoor runs. Fishing wire through finished walls, crawl spaces or underground adds labor.
- A full panel. A 240V outlet needs a double-pole breaker. If there is no room or spare capacity, see panel upgrade cost.
- Local labor rates and permit fees, which differ by city (see below).
Installing a 240V outlet in the garage
Garages are the most common place for a new 240V outlet, for an EV charger, a welder or a compressor. Ask your electrician whether your local code requires GFCI protection for the garage outlet, and whether the permit is included in the quote.
NEMA 14-50 or hardwired charger?
A NEMA 14-50 outlet lets you plug in a Level 2 charger and take it with you if you move. A hardwired charger can charge faster on a larger circuit. See EV charger installation cost for both options.
Estimated 240V outlet installation cost by city
Short-run installs adjusted by local electrician wages from BLS OEWS. Long runs, panel work and (for EV outlets) the permit are extra.

240V outlet questions
How much does it cost to install a 240V outlet?
A new 240V outlet for an appliance typically costs $200–$800 including labor, wire, breaker and outlet. Long wire runs add about $6–$12 per foot.
How much does a NEMA 14-50 outlet installation cost?
For EV charging with the panel close by, a NEMA 14-50 outlet typically costs $700–$1,200 installed, plus the permit ($25–$800 depending on your city).
Do I need a panel upgrade for a 240V outlet?
Only if your panel has no room for a new double-pole breaker or not enough spare capacity. An electrician checks this with a load calculation before quoting.
